Title

Music Effect on Plant Growth

Problem Scenario

All over my house there is different types of music playing. With lots of plants in my house as well, I want to find out if the different types of music impact the plant growth of the plants hanging and sitting around.

Broad Question

Does different music have an effect on plant growth when played to the plants consistently?

Specific Question

When playing completely different types of music to three of the same plants in separate rooms with the same sunlight, do the plants grow differently by the effect of the different genres of music.

Hypothesis

Knowing that the three different types of music are lullaby, pop, and none, I predict that the plant with the pop music playing will grow faster because of the more up beat music and tempo. The rapidness of the music will hopefully help the pop plant progress faster.

Variables

Independent Variable: different types of music

Dependent Variable: three different plants

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: one plant the same as the rest but no music

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

Growth
music/ 2 kinds
3 plants
no music
Vermiculite

General Plan

Have three plants- two with music and one without as a control. Play the music to each plant for the growing time. Taking care of the plants by plenty of sunlight and water will help the plants grow to there fullest height- which will be part of my data collection.

Potential Problems And Solutions

Some Potential Problems could be : plants die- to much water, not enough water(sun fry plants)
The Solutions could be : extra seeds

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

Potential Environmental concerns: house gets to hot or cold for plants or not enough sunlight or water
Therefore you would need to have extra seeds for the correct data

Experimental Design

(add the correct headings from the experimental design page before beginning)

Controlled Experiment:

Trials: 3
Measured: height
Subjects: 2 different music types
When Data Collected: Feb- 13,16,19,24,27,29
Where Data collected: at my house and stored in my iPod, wiki, and Google docs
Methods: water every 2 days, and music played every night for an hour and a half

Detailed Procedure

  1. take three seed starter pots
  2. fill each one with the same amount of soil
  3. dig a small hole in each pot for each of the seeds
  4. place two seeds in each pot
  5. place each pot in different windows (all same side of the house for same sunlight)
  6. water each one daily
  7. play pop music to one
  8. play lullaby music to another
  9. play no music to the control plant
  10. record each plant growth everyday ( height)

Data Analysis

All Raw Data

-One Plant died (pop plant on the 27th of February)
-Each one was succefully growing till the end except for the pop plant
-Lullaby Plant was not budding at first but it just started to develope leaves at February 24th
-The no music plant is very full
-All plants developed accept for the pop plant

Results
February 19th: Pop Plant begging to adapt to surroundings-(1 3/8 in)
Lullaby Plant adapting to surroundings but no as progressive as the others-(3/4 of an inch)
No Music Plant growing very tall (2 1/8th in.) therefore, same as above
February 24th:
Pop plant starting to fall but still growing-(2 1/4 in)
Lullaby budding late in process but still healthy-( 7/8 in)
No music healthily growing tall!-(3 1/8 in)
February 27th:
Pop Plant died with no way of regrowth
February 29th:
Lullaby the smallest-(2 1/4)
None plant is taller than any other-(4 3/8)

Conclusion

The music effect on plant growth actually slows them down. They all had the same amount of water and sunlight therefore no music lets the plants grow to their fullest height! When predicting my hypothesis I thought the music with pop music being played to it would be the most successful, the plant with the lullaby music being played to it would be the smallest, and therefore the plant with no music being played to it would be the second most successful plant. I now know that a quiet, tranquil place would be the best environment for a successful plant.

Discussion

While watching these plants progress, one of the patterns I saw was of course the plants progressing in height and color. The end result was to help a plant grow to its fullest. It is best if there is no music near the plant for the best growth. If any, pop music would be the best because that plant was the runner up for the winner as you could say. Were there relationships between the independent and dependent variable? Yes there were. The plants definitively reacted to the different types of music via the results. To answer the question was their any changes in your plan/ minor or major setbacks, yes there were. A minor setback in my experiment was the pop plant dyeing with no sign of regrowth. Although, I kept my project strong and the plant dyeing, (I think) has improved my data immensely!

Benefit to Community and/or Science

These results are a benefit to the community because if their were to be a local flower/plant shop, they would know to have as little music as possible to make their plants grow more efficiently. This could effect anyone working with plants or yard work.

Background Research

I have done a lot of background research. The Soil Type is: Miracle Grow Potting Soil. This consists of Vermiculite (a substitute commonly found in most potting soils, used to keep dirt from packing to allow air vents helping the plants to grow to their fullest height and color)
The Plant Type is: Non-Purple Stem Hairless Wisconsin Fast Plants ~single recessive trait, anl/anl ~few to no hairs known as trichoms on the stem.

Abstra

When playing various types of music to three different plants, does it effect their growth? When having many plants in my house along with many different types of music, I want to figure out if the different types of music effect how they grow! My procedure consisted of having three different types of music (pop, no music, and lullaby). Those being played to three separate plants. I planned and followed through with watering them every two days. I would start collecting the data the 16th of February and end the 29th.
As the experiment was coming to an end, one of my plants died! I was first semi-upset but then came to realize that this was new data. On February 19th all the plants were healthily developing. On February 24th each plant was getting enough sun and water. On February 27th the pop plant died. As far as I was in the experiment there was no way I could start a new plant and there was no sign of regrowth. I admit this was poor planning on my part. On February 29th the only plants left were the lullaby, and the no music plant. They were both fully green, and nice and tall!
In conclusion, the plant with no music is the tallest, the lullaby plant is the smallest/most effected, and therefore the no music plant is in last place (so to speak). If you really want your plants to grow to their fullest, its best to have as little music or noise around them!
